5 Minutes with Kathleen Mills

In the latest of our Faculty Highlight series, we take 5 minutes to get to know Kathleen Mills

What is your role at ASD?

High School Design & Innovation Team Lead.

How long have you been in ASD?

6 years.

Why did you choose to be an educator?

For many reasons - but mostly because teaching is fun :) I love talking to people, as well as hearing ideas and stories from students. I also love building, making, creating, and sharing creativity with others. With all of that - I figured becoming an Art teacher was the perfect pathway for me. My most gratifying moments in teaching are when students gain a greater awareness of self, grow in their sense of empathy and kindness, and see their ideas come to life unexpectedly.

What is your favorite book/quote/movie?

Just about any Eleanor Roosevelt quote! “It is better to light a candle than curse the darkness.” and “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”

What is your favorite class or topic to teach in ASD?

I most enjoy facilitating learning and cognitively coaching students through their creative process. However, if I had to choose - I love teaching Photography, Film & Drawing!

Share something that makes ASD special

The warm and inviting community, and our unique mission statement - involving the pursuit of passion & following of dreams.

Share your favorite ASD memory

ASD Christmas Party & Senior Graduation Dinners. These were amazing times to connect with families, colleagues, and other members of the community to celebrate how much we have to be grateful for! Some of my other favorite memories were taking part in numerous ASD Musicals, Harmonies for Hope, and INSPIRE week experiences with students. Experiential learning is one of my favorite things to be a part of.
