| Elementary School Workshop Addresses Parenting Dilemmas |
|
Jan. 18, 2012 The two-day workshop focused on balancing love and anger, helping children with transition, and building and negotiating independence. During the first session, elementary school counselor Dr. Onita Nakra, who led the workshop, talked about a common parental challenge—saying no without yelling. She also looked at how setting limits is a critical aspect of a child’s growth into young adulthood and examined different ways of setting limits and enforcing consequences. The second session focused on helping parents understand why children react to certain situations in a particular way and examined the importance of understanding where children are within their developmental range in order to help them thrive. Dr. Nakra also discussed situations (below) which often cause children to stumble and what parents can do to help them avoid these pitfalls.
